Schermo dell'Arte - Archivio Film Presented at Lo schermo dell'arte 2019

How can an artist who introduced abstract painting in the early 20th century be completely forgotten? Stuck in shadows all her life, Hilma af Klint’s extraordinary work upsets today’s art world. Her painting went beyond the boundaries of material reality, and led her to seek life’s meaning in spirituality and abstraction. Af Klint did her first abstract painting in 1906, four years before Vassily Kandisky started in that vein. Why was she ignored? Why did her paintings remain hidden in an attic until thirty years after her death? Why aren’t they available on the market? Halina Dyrschka’s film is the first about Swedish artist’s life and work, the role of women in art and a shocking art world scandal. In 2018, af Klint’s retrospective at the New York Guggenheim drew the largest crowds in the museum’s history.
