Edge of Life

by John Menick, 2024, 40’
ov: English; st: Italian
World premiere
Live performance, commissioned by Lo schermo dell'arte

In Edge of Life American artist John Menick speaks with a sentient computer about the possibility of digital immortality. A kind of Turing Test in reverse, the computer quizzes the artist for purposes which may or may not include the cloning of his consciousness.
A “live” performance about undead subjects, Edge of Life is a strange inquiry into how the digital transforms the boundaries of the living.

Ernest Cole: Lost and Found

by Raoul Peck, France, USA, 2024, 106'
ov: English; st: Italian

South African photographer Ernest Cole (1940 - 1990) was the first artist to courageously expose the horrors of apartheid. His book House of Bondage, published in 1967 when he was just 27 years old, forced him into exile in New York and Europe for the rest of his life. Raoul Peck recounts the challenges Cole faced, both as an artist and as a Black man, in a deeply racist world, starting from the discovery in 2017 of 60,000 missing negatives in a bank vault in Sweden.

At the presence of the artist

Bradley’s cinematic omnibus America (2019) reimagines a lost history in American cinema. Inspired by the earliest surviving feature-length film with an all-black cast, Bert Williams’ Lime Kiln Club Field Day (1913), the acclaimed director conjures a series of stunning black-and-white vignettes of joy, domesticity, and triumph.

AKA

by Garrett Bradley, USA, 2019, 8’17’’
ov: English; st: Italian
Italian premiere in the presence of the artist

AKA is the first in a trilogy about relationships between women, in this case relationships between mothers and daughters born into mixed-race families or families of the same race with varying skin tones. Like many of Garrett Bradley's films, the experimental short developed out of hours-long conversations between Bradley and her female protagonists. She began with a series of questions regarding race, upward mobility, and the relationship between white women and black women, which the artist posed to friends, family, and social media—an ongoing resource in her work. In one instance, one of Bradley’s subjects repeatedly asked her mother, “Are you color struck?” The term, made famous by Zora Neal Hurston’s 1925 play of the same name, refers to the notion of “colorism,” which describes both interracial and intraracial forms of discrimination based on the color of one’s skin. Bradley subsequently used the phrase to shape the visual and sonic landscapes of the film-specifically AKA’s prismatic and shimmering effects, which contribute to the film's hallucinatory and dream-like atmosphere. Her dialogues with mothers and daughters would also determine much of the choreography and locations of scenes, articulating an approach of filmmaking that both honors and issues from the visions of its subjects.

Safe (Excerpt)

by Garrett Bradley, USA, 2022, sound, 3’15’’
Italian premiere in the presence of the artist

Safe (2022) is the second film in a trilogy exploring the overlap between women’s interior and exterior lives. Following AKA (2019), which examined intergenerational relationships, Safe delves into inner worlds, depicting them as vivid and parallel to the outside world. Featuring Donna Crump and Aloné Watts, the film captures the ineffable nature of interior emotions, treating them as a radical space of Black life. The excerpt was screened at a symposium organized by Hilton Als at The Brooklyn Museum.

The film revolves around the friendship between Danish sculptor Marie Lund and Nashashibi herself. While working with different media, the two artists share a similar methodology in conceiving and reflecting on their works. The Invisible Worm is a playful exploration of the myth of the artist and the dynamics of friendship among artists. The title refers to the poem by William Blake, The Sick Rose (1794), in which the poet addresses the rose, warning her that an invisible worm has made her sick.

The reconstruction, blending fiction and reality, of a mysterious secret project run by the Indonesian army that began after the collapse of Soeharto's authoritarian regime in 1999, in which children from rural areas were kidnapped, subjected to dreamlike experiments, and indoctrinated.

Daphne Was a Torso Ending in Leaves

by Catriona Gallagher, UK, Italy, 2024, sound, 13'27''

Daphne, who was transformed into a laurel tree, is celebrated here as a heroine and the author of her own destiny. The Speech

by Lina Lapelytė, Lithuania, 2024, sound, 21'
World premiere in the presence of the artist

The latest performative work by Lithuanian artist Lina Lapelytė expands her exploration of the connection between sound and community. The film is a result of her performance, which took place in September 2024 in Paris as part of the Festival d'Automne, hosted at the Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection. A group of children and teenagers imitate the sounds of nature through vocalizations that resemble the calls of animals and birds. It serves as a reflection on the failure of language and the disconnect experienced by younger generations, who are increasingly urbanized and distanced from natural environments.

Being Strong Is Hard

di Leyla Yenirce, Germany, 2021, 4’13’’

The film is a rapid flow of images, gathered online or created by the artist, featuring Kurdish activists, journalists, and fighters—mostly women—facing the camera, often smiling, accompanied by electronic music. The work, which the artist herself describes as an "image machine," combines concepts of solidarity and resistance and serves as a tribute to those who have been killed or who are still fighting.

Galb’Echaouf

by Abdessamad El Montassir, Marocco, 2021, 18’43’’

While investigating an event that profoundly changed the landscape of the Sahara, El Montassir was faced with the silence of previous generations who remain haunted by a history that they are unable to tell. With Galb’Echaouf, El Montassir focuses the viewer's attention on landscapes, plants, and poetry, in search of answers or elements that could participate in the reconstruction of this amnesia and the transmission of the narratives

Good Morning Young Body

by Charmaine Poh, 2023, 6’23’’

The video uses as its basis found footage and material of the artist’s time as a preteen TV actor in the early 2000s in Singapore, a time of an unregulated internet and nascent image distribution. Through the use of a deep-fake, the video resurrects the series character, E-Ching, to address the politics of the gaze, the femme-presenting body, and agency. By compressing time and space, the eternal 12-year-old E-Ching offers a revisionist narrative that holds a yearning for freedom.

He Said, We Must Forget

by Sarah Brahim, 2023, 9’22’’

Originally conceived as a two-channel installation, He Said, We Must Forget uses images collected over the course of an entire year, two films run in parallel; they intersect and oppose each other, one undoing what the other brings forward with a technique based on hand-painting. Through fragments of images, Brahim tries to understand involuntarily whether it is possible to forget certain things in order to move ahead and how memories, and access to them, become blocked. An invitation to contemplate about the limits of human memory, its longevity, and the delicate boundary between reality and imagination.

Sight Leak

by Peng Zuqiang, Cina, 2022, 12’15’’

Sight Leak, filmed in 16mm black & white, reconfigures Roland Barthes’ memoirs of his 1974 journey to China, published posthumously, from the perspective of a local tourist visiting Changsha; the artist’s hometown.
Barthes' judgments about China are refracted in the film as fragments of dialogues on class, queerness and desire, responding to the reflections on the same matters elicited alongside Barthes’ sense of eroticism.

Wish You a Lovely Sunday

by Young-jun Tak, 2021, 18’45’'

Two choreographers and two dancers collaborated to create new choreography for the church “Kirche am Südstern” and the queer club “SchwuZ” in Berlin, each assigned a different Bach piano piece for four hands. After rehearsals, the venues were swapped, and participants learned their performance locations only on the actual day of filming, requiring them to adapt their choreographies to the new spaces. This juxtaposition of distinct settings aims to explore the coexistence of religious practice and club culture, highlighting the dancers' struggles and commitment to fitting their movements into these new contexts.
