Armin Linke: The City as Archive. Florence

Exhibition curated by Hannah Baader and Costanza Caraffa

Housed in the extraordinary spaces of Palazzo Grifoni Budini Gattai, which for years hosted the Photographic Archive of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence, the exhibition offers a critical and captivating reading of Florence through the photographs of artist and filmmaker Armin Linke alongside historical documentary photographs from the Photographic Archive. The exhibition explores archives, museums, and collections from twenty institutions outside the city’s usual tourist circuits, including the State Archive, the Museo Galileo, the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, and the Military Geographic Institute.

On the occasion of Lo schermo dell’arte, the exhibition will feature a video work: an animated and multimedia storyboard that conveys the conceptual and relational geography uncovered through five years of field research, condensed in the publication The City as Archive. The work is accompanied by field recordings intertwined with a sound composition by musician Giuseppe Ielasi.

Armin Linke (Milan, 1966) works with photography and cinema, questioning the medium, its technologies, narrative structures, and its complicity within broader socio-political frameworks. In a collaborative approach with other creatives, researchers, and scientists, his work unfolds across multiple levels, focusing on the exhibition device and its relationship with space.

Linke’s works have been exhibited in numerous countries. His installation Alpi won the Special Prize at the 2004 Venice Biennale of Architecture, and Image Capital received the Kubus Sparda Art Prize in 2019. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at: Igrexa da Universidade de Santiago de Compostela; Forte di Bard, Aosta; Centre Pompidou, Paris; MAST, Bologna; Museum Folkwang, Essen; HKW, Berlin; Matadero, Madrid.
