Afternoon Hearsay is a reflection on the nature of image-making and on how cultural, historical, and political narratives are shared and disseminated. The film reconstructs the history of the 8.75 mm film stock, a unique format developed and produced exclusively in China between the 1960s and 1980s. Using cameraless techniques and photochemical abstraction, Peng reflects on disappearance and memory, asking: what is a film without a camera?

Panorama

by Amie Siegel United States, 2023, sound, 70'
Italian premiere in the presence of the artist and composer Jeff Murcko

Amie Siegel's Panorama traces the complex processes of how cultural materials—once living—enter a museum collection and begin their afterlife as objects of display. Bringing to life a vast trove of dormant 16mm film reels the artist found in the Carnegie Museum of Natural History's storage, Siegel re-works these scenes of specimen collection and the creation of the museum’s dioramas across geographies and decades, adding sound effects and a restless, haunting score that exposes, in turn, the extractive practices, Western perspectives, indigenous labor and painstaking artifice that shape these collections.

Angine, an unhappily married woman, indulges in compulsive shopping in a department store, where she becomes entranced by an innocent clerk, Malaise. Surreal and yet chilling, the film is both a sharp critique of control and a romantic tribute to those who dare to defy the status quo.

A pair of ghosts in a desolate digital landscape, flooded and ablaze, in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic future, are trapped in incessant discussions about personal conflicts—genetic testing, pain, love—against the backdrop of contemporary collective anxieties. A work steeped in melancholy, where the extraordinary animation of the otherworldly protagonists heightens the realism of the couple’s arguments drawn from real life.

Peter Hujar’s Day

by Ira Sachs, United States, Germany, 2025, 75'
ov: English; sub: Italian

In 1974, writer Linda Rosenkrantz and photographer Peter Hujar recorded a conversation in her New York apartment. The subject of the meeting was the account of a day in the life of the celebrated artist, one of the leading figures of the cultural scene of the time. In the film, masterfully performed by Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall—who recite that real conversation word for word—Ira Sachs freely and imaginatively recreates that afternoon and the bohemian spirit of New York in those years.

Grounds of Coherence #1, but this is the language we met in

by Shen Xin, China, 2023, 12’ 16’’
ov: English, Arabic, Hindi, Kazakh, Turkish, Uyghur, Mandarin, Tibetan; sub: English

Protests in regional Mandarin, words for a story in Arabic, and a couple telling myth felt in English; what is heard, and what is then given meaning in these connectedness of migratory and loving nature. The wide-ranging imagery and multifaceted soundscape are permeated with the artist’s deep yearning to unearth language in its most primal and embodied forms, revealing both the persistence and fragility of communication across geographies and the essential, if imperfect, role of translation as an act of connection.

Scenes of festive events accompanied the premiere of the film Jean Galmot, aventurier (1990) by Alain Maline, a “celebration” of the French presence in Guyana, in which Jean-Baptsite's father appeared as an extra. By slowing down and rewinding this footage, together with video images surrounding the making of Maline’s film, Moune Ô reveals the colonial inheritance within the Western collective unconscious, still marked by persistent stereotypes.
