The adoptive home in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada—where American photographer and filmmaker Robert Frank, who passed away in 2019, and artist June Leaf lived for over 50 years—was a source of inspiration for their art. Their presence in that remote rural area also became a lasting point of reference for a close-knit community of friends and neighbors.
In 2021, June invited this community to come together and remember Robert, while she, who later passed away in July 2024, continued her artistic journey.
Extraordinary archival materials, including excerpts from Frank’s films and photographs, are interwoven in this deeply affectionate, sincere, and creatively intimate dual portrait. It stands as a testament not only to the couple’s relationship, but also to their enduring bond with the Mabou community in Cape Breton, and to how the artists were profoundly shaped by the light of that landscape, its harsh, windy winters, and the rhythms of the sea.
