A woman lies awake in the middle of the night. While she tosses and turns, a flame passes through her without burning her. The flame spreads and the panels continue to change, a blue associated with peaceful dreams appears sporadically to remind the viewer that it’s middle of the night. Outside her home is a set with theatre backdrops that represent the alternating landscapes of the state between dream and reality.
In this short film Apichatpong condenses themes of his cinema and installations, simulating a scenario in which the painted landscapes represent the possibility of voluntarily changing what we see when asleep and awake, and to voluntarily remain in that limbo.
Blue was created as part of the Opéra de Paris 3e Scéne project, an online platform that brings together original contributions from artists, directors, composers, photographers, coreographers and writers.
