American architect Stourley Kracklite arrives in Rome accompanied by his young pregnant wife to organize an exhibition dedicated to the architect Etienne Louis Boullée, of whom he is a knowledgeable expert. Iconic buildings of Rome such as the Pantheon, Villa Adriana in Tivoli, and the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, along with Boullée’s unfinished utopian projects, serve as the backdrop to the protagonist’s downward spiral, obsessed with the terminal illness that has struck him in the abdomen.
