The gestures and hierarchies of workers in a sawmill in Lagos, Nigeria, are tracked and highlighted by blue elements in Makoko Sawmill by Karimah Ashadu, deliberately installed to emphasize a bottom-up perspective.
Karimah Ashadu (1985, Germany/Nigeria) creates experimental short films that emphasize the emotions of storytelling. To date, she has made several films in Nigeria focusing on labor and self-awareness in relation to place.

She earned a master’s degree from Chelsea College of Art, London, after graduating with honors from the University of Reading, Berkshire. From 2014 to 2016, she attended the De Ateliers residency program in Amsterdam and has exhibited her work in international spaces such as De Ateliers, Bozar (Brussels), and the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève.

Ashadu has received numerous awards and recognitions, including ARTE Creative, Arts Council England, and De Ateliers.
