Markasit by Nico Joana Weber explores the stark contrast between the brutalist architecture of Ruhr-University in Bochum and the natural environment surrounding it.
Nico Joana Weber (1983, Germany/Italy) studied fine arts and art history at Goldsmiths College in London and completed a postgraduate program at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne in 2013.

Through her films and complex video installations, she explores modernist architecture, its distinctive elements, and its subjective uses. By observing various environments and locations, she reflects on the subtle changes that have occurred over time, focusing on processes of transformation and constant renewal.

She has received several awards and grants, including a scholarship for the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (2012), funding for South America (2013), the Fiction Film Award Ruhr for Markasit (2014), and she is currently a recipient of the Villa Romana Award 2016.

Her works have been shown at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen (2015), the Marl Video Art Award (2014), and the Videonale Parcours of Videonale.14 (2013).

Her most recent solo exhibition, Selva Negra, opened at the Photographic Collection in Cologne in July 2016.
