Produced on the occasion of the 60th Venice Biennale, the film offers an intimate look at Massimo Bartolini’s project for the Italy Pavilion 2024. The artist, in dialogue with curator Luca Cerizza, involves engineers, artisans, writers, performers, and musicians—including Caterina Barbieri, Gavin Bryars, and Kali Malone—creating a complex and articulated system where art, music, technology, and engineering converge. The result is an immersive experience unfolding across the indoor and outdoor spaces of the Italy Pavilion, where music, sound, vibration, and listening form the core elements of a large choral work. Throughout the film, which documents months of work, director Matteo Frittelli and his team from Alto Piano—longtime collaborators of the artist—introduce us to the conceptual organization and technical realization of the installation. The voices of those involved clarify the various issues addressed and stimulate new reflections on listening, representation, and audience participation.
Matteo Frittelli is a filmmaker whose most significant works include the film La Personne De Georges Adéagbo, presented in 2012 at the Triennale de Paris, Palais de Tokyo. Recently, he created a short film dedicated to the American artist James Turrell, presented in AlUla on the occasion of the artist’s solo exhibition in Saudi Arabia.
Since 2017, he has been directing the Alto Piano studio in Milan, founded together with photographer Agostino Osio, working across projects in contemporary art, fashion, and culture.
