In Palmyra by Caterina Erica Shanta, the gradual dissolution of images from videos found on the internet symbolically corresponds to the escalation of the crisis that devastated the Syrian city.
Caterina Erica Shanta (1986, Germany/Italy) explores imagery, especially photography, as a fundamental part of memory and identity reconstruction. Using video as her primary medium, she focuses her research on redefining the images characteristic of documentary cinema.

After completing a Master’s in Visual Arts at IUAV in 2014, she participated in a residency program at the Atelier of Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa. During this period, she produced Sogni, a documentary about World War II in Venice.

At the end of 2015, with university support for production, she created Palmyra, a film made for the theatrical performance Omaggio di Venezia a Palmyra: un canto per immagini, curated by Monica Centanni and Marco Bertozzi.

In early 2016, Shanta took part in Artevisione, a project promoted by Careof and Sky Arte HD, winning second prize—a three-month residency at Careof’s studios in Milan.

She is currently working on a new film, Il cielo stellato, which will be produced in Matera in 2017 with support from Careof, the Matera-Basilicata 2019 Foundation, and the Southeritage Foundation.
