Using new technologies as a means of expression and social critique, Gatopoulos’s (1994) short film evokes a dystopian future where art and language are illegal. Through an eerie, artificial black-and-white style, an unknown alphabet created by combining AI-generated typographic glitches, and music also generated by AI, the film presents images with a surreal and unsettling aesthetic that serve as a warning bell about the loss of individuality. A special event at the Critics’ Week of the latest Venice Film Festival, it was awarded at Corti d’Argento.
Andrea Gatopoulos is a film producer and director, a member of the EFA, and an alumnus of Berlinale Talents and the Locarno Spring Academy. His short and feature films primarily explore the relationship between humans and technology and have been screened at Quinzaine, Locarno, Venice, Rotterdam, and many other festivals. The Eggregores’ Theory is his latest short film.
