Lo schermo dell’arte is dedicated to promoting moving images to young audiences through the Oltre lo schermo project.
Between 2024 and 2025, four activities have been carried out to introduce children to the language of cinema and the production of short films. These activities were designed for preschool, primary, and lower secondary school students from the Istituti Comprensivi Pirandello in District 4 of the Municipality of Florence and Pelago (FI).
The project is carried out as part of the Piano Nazionale Cinema e Immagini per la Scuola, promoted by Direzione Generale Cinema e Audiovisivo and MiM and thanks to the contribution of Fondazione CR Firenze as part of “PARTECIPAZIONE CULTURALE”.
Cinema La Compagnia, Florence, November 13-14, 2024
Cinema Italia, Pontassieve, December 11-12, 2024
Lo schermo dell’arte Young is a film series curated by Anna Ricciardi, aimed at second and third-year students of lower secondary schools from the Istituti Comprensivi Pirandello and Pelago. The series took place during the 17th edition of Lo schermo dell’arte at Cinema La Compagnia in Florence and continued with two additional days of screenings at Cinema Italia in Pontassieve.
The selected films spanned various genres and formats—feature films, animated shorts, documentaries, and fiction—and address social issues such as environmental sustainability and migration, inviting students to reflect on these topics.
The project involved collaboration with Milo Adami, a filmmaker and instructor at ISIA in Urbino, a CIPS trainer, and the founder of the 24FPS association. It also included the participation of students from the Universities of Pisa and Florence: Marco Abbenante, Camilla Bomberini, Francesco Chiavacci, Giovanni Giacomazzo, and Eleonora Pilia.
Educational Kit – Classroom Follow-Up Activities
In the days following the film screenings, an educational kit will be shared with the teachers of the participating classes. This kit includes proposals for activities to deepen the exploration of the films’ content (civic education) and exercises for visual text analysis (audiovisual education).
The activities can be tailored to the specific needs of each class, depending on the teachers’ creativity and the time they wish to dedicate to them. They can adopt a single-disciplinary focus or take a multidisciplinary and cross-curricular approach.

Come in un documentario
January 28 - March 11, 2025
A workshop aimed at the third-year classes of the lower secondary school at I.C. Statale Pirandello, conducted by artists Roberto Fassone and Giacomo Raffaelli.
The final result is a documentary that creatively combines filmed images and recorded voices of the participants.
Participants were invited to reflect on and creatively engage with their school and the neighborhood they live in through exercises and questions. However, their responses were not expressed in writing or spoken word, but through the creation of videos, filmed both in the neighborhood and using public domain/open access web materials. These were enriched by the voices and aspirations of the students, who expressed themselves on the making of a documentary and on issues related to sustainability.
The documentary produced during the workshop was screened on 13 May 2025 at Cinema San Quirico in Florence and will have its public premiere on 19 June 2025 in Piazza Pitti, Florence, as part of Lo Schermo dell’Arte – Notti di Mezza Estate, within the Apriti Cinema summer series.

CineKIDS
February 19 - May 9, 2025
A workshop aimed at the preschool students of I.C. Pirandello, carried out in collaboration with Taartrovers Amsterdam, a partner of the Cinemini Europe network. It includes in-class film screenings and the completion of workshop activities using the kit provided by Cinemini Europe.
From May 5 to 9, the multimedia installation MiniCine, created by Taartrovers, was set up for the first time in Italy within the school premises.
Thanks to a series of cardboard installations and structures, the children were able to playfully explore the world of moving images through devices such as the magic lantern, the thaumatrope, stop-motion video creation, and live sound design.
This second phase of the workshop also included the screening of the film Sally by Luna Maurer and Roel Wouters (Netherlands, 2005).
The workshops were developed using materials from Cinemini Europe.

PRODUCED VIDEOS

by Roberto Fassone, Giacomo Raffaelli, and the 3rd-year students of I.C. Pirandello, Florence
(Italy, 2025, 12’)
The students of I.C. Pirandello were invited to imagine wishes for their school, their neighborhood, and the film itself.
The result is a collective story of Florence’s Quartiere 4, exploring the connection with the territory through video footage and materials sourced from the web: a poetic and visionary portrait, suspended between reality and possibility, shaped by the gaze of the new generations.

by Maria Pecchioli and the 5th-grade students of I.C. Pirandello Primary School, Florence
(Italy, 2025, 8’)
Using Osmo cameras, Zoom microphones, and a green screen, the students had the opportunity to learn and take on various roles in film production—from directing to writing the concept and screenplay, to shooting, sound recording, and makeup and hairstyling.
Starting from the theme of spirit animals, the video clip explores self-narration—a subjective storytelling by the students that allowed them to extend the physical boundaries of the school spaces through the use of the green screen.
