Lo schermo dell’arte is committed to promoting moving images for younger audiences through the project Oltre lo schermo.

An image education project aimed at students and teachers from nursery, primary, and lower secondary schools, designed to strengthen critical knowledge of audiovisual media by expanding educational offerings with activities that introduce cinematic language, and to provide skills in writing, production, and editing.

Activities will begin in January 2026 with film screenings in cinemas and via streaming, as well as workshop-based activities for both students and teachers.

The schools involved in the project are I.C. Pirandello in Florence, I.C. Pelago, and I.C. Teresa Mattei in Bagno a Ripoli.

Oltre lo schermo – 3rd Edition
is an initiative carried out within the framework of the National Plan for Cinema and Images for Schools, promoted by the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC) and the Ministry of Education and Merit (MIM).

Mary Anning (Switzerland, Belgium, 2025, 72’)
by Marcel Barelli
At 12 years old, Mary is a determined and curious teenager. She spends her days exploring the seashore in search of fossils—strange stones from another time. She is convinced that if she can unravel the secret of a mysterious sketch left by her father as his only legacy, she will be able to lift her family out of poverty. What she discovers will make Mary the first paleontologist of the modern era.

On the 8th Day (France, 2023, 8’)
by Agathe Sénéchal, Alicia Massez, Elise Debruyne, Flavie Carin, Théo Duhautois
Seven days were needed to create the world; only one was enough to disrupt its balance. Created by a collective of newly graduated students from Pôle 3D in France, On the 8th Day is the result of extraordinary, visually striking animation work made with fabric and thread, accompanied by powerful music.

Sauvages (Switzerland, France, Belgium, 2024, 87’)
by Claude Barras
In the heart of Borneo, Kéria rescues a baby orangutan from loggers. Together with her cousin Selaï and little Oshi, she confronts a forest threatened by destruction, rediscovering along the way her roots in the indigenous Penan people. LABORATORI PRIMARIA

January - March 2026

Three workshops for 4th and 5th grade classes at I.C. Statale Pirandello, led by artists Agnese Galiotto, Claudia Losi, and Lori Lako.
The workshops, focused on early and hands-on visual literacy, are dedicated to exploring the world of moving images and are structured into three distinct activities.

Agnese Galiotto – Animals in Motion
Years 4 and 5, “Locchi” Primary School, I.C. Pirandello
January 20–21, 2026

A workshop dedicated to drawing and representing animal movement. Through the creation of drawing sequences and the use of the Toupie Fantoches—a rotating mirrored pyramid—children transform still images into small animations inspired by early cinema.
The three-hour workshop alternates between screening, experimentation, and hands-on activities, fostering observation, imagination, and creativity.

Claudia Losi – Anìmule
Years 4 and 5, “Calvino” Primary School, I.C. Pirandello
January 22–23, 2026

Starting from her performance Anìmule, artist Claudia Losi leads a workshop for children that reinterprets and adapts the principles of the original project, previously presented as part of the VR exhibition Eating the Planet at Palazzo Strozzi during the 18th edition of Lo Schermo dell’Arte.

The activity invites children to explore the relationship between form, light, and storytelling through a simple creative gesture: tearing sheets of paper by hand to create silhouettes. These figures, born from a spontaneous and intuitive act, then become the protagonists of a short story.

Using a flashlight, the silhouettes are animated and projected onto the walls, turning into moving shadows. The experience becomes a reflection on early cinema and on how light, movement, and narrative are closely intertwined in the creation of an image.

Lori Lako
Years 4 and 5, “Ambrosoli” Primary School, I.C. Pirandello
February 19–27, 2026

A video workshop introducing children to the use of the fixed shot, without editing, allowing rhythm to emerge from each participant’s timing, words, and gestures.

The activity takes place around a single desk, positioned in a location within the school chosen together with the participants. The shot begins empty and, one by one, the children enter the frame, sit down, and say a verb in the infinitive form, inspired both by everyday school actions and by imagined gestures.

Before leaving the frame, each child places a personal object on the desk, contributing to the creation of a collective installation. The videos produced by the different classes are then edited by the artist as variations on the same theme, moving between reality and imagination.

Lower Secondary School Workshops

January - March 2026

Year 3, Lower Secondary School – I.C. Pirandello, Florence

Artists Roberto Fassone and Giacomo Raffaelli will guide the classes in the creation of a video through playful and experimental activities developed during the previous two editions of the project. These activities allow students to learn by doing, stimulating creativity and encouraging lateral thinking.

The programme includes hands-on exercises in filming techniques, sound recording, and basic editing skills, aimed at combining images, sounds, and words to generate different meanings and emotions.

Years 1, 2 and 3, Lower Secondary School “Ghiberti,” I.C. Pelago

We Are Moved by Desire, Not by Calculation is a workshop led by artist Marina Arienzale, with the support of sound artist Francesco Puppo. The classes will explore the tools and formats typical of short videos and interviews.

At the end of the programme, the artist will present a video and audio interpretation of the experience shared with the students, based on editing the materials produced during the sessions.

Years 2 and 3, Lower Secondary School “Granacci,” I.C. Teresa Mattei, Bagno a Ripoli

Guided by tutor Veronica Citi—videomaker, lecturer, and coordinator of the two-year Cinema and Audiovisuals course at the Libera Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence—the classes will experiment with the stages of audiovisual production and acquire skills in writing, filming, and editing.

Specifically, students will engage either with stop-motion animation techniques or the creation of a collective music video.

FILM PLAY KIT

March - May 2026

Lo schermo dell’arte, in collaboration with Taartrovers, is creating a kit to be donated to the five nursery schools of the project’s participating school districts. The kit is designed to support workshop activities that explore the world of cinema and pre-cinema, using techniques such as stop-motion, the thaumatrope, and shadow theatre.

The kit includes in-class viewing of short, non-narrative, abstract, and animated films, with the aim of inspiring children and fostering imagination and creativity. A training session for teachers is also planned to provide guidance on how to use the kit independently.

workshops for teachers

February - April 2026

I.C. Pirandello
February – April 2026

A workshop led by Roberto Fassone and Giacomo Raffaelli aimed at enhancing the regular curriculum through the use of video, providing teachers with basic skills for handling audiovisual equipment. The goal is to gradually enable teachers to work independently with the video tools donated to the school.

I.C. Pelago and I.C. Teresa Mattei
February – April 2026

The training programme Reason and Feeling: Cinema in Educational Relationships, led by Chiara Tognolotti, associate professor at the University of Pisa and expert in film history and gender studies, will guide teachers in exploring cinema as a teaching tool and a space for critical reflection.

The course consists of three sessions: from using cinema in educational projects and exploring the relationship between screens and blackboards, to analyzing cinema as a space for discussion on cultural differences, and finally reflecting on the representation of gender identities.

OLTRE LO SCHERMO 2024/2025
