Freely inspired by Roman PolaĹ„ski’s psychological horror film Repulsion, this short video by German artist duo M+M, Marc Weis and Martin De Mattia, was filmed in 3D in a perfectly reconstructed miniature home setting. Soon the scenario that reproduces an old-fashioned bourgeois apartment is covered with a disturbing feeling, an occult writing in chalk appears on the floor and the careful movements of thin legs reveal the tenant: a praying mantis. In the bedroom, the female’s cannibalism of her partner takes place, typical of these fascinating insects. The viewer witnesses this bloody and meticulous ritual extrapolated from its natural environment and inserted in a space belonging to our private lives. The soundtrack, a persistent hum with the crunch of the carapace as it is eaten, fills the tiny rooms with an intensity typical of the cinema of fear.
M+M is an artist duo composed of Marc Weis (Luxembourg, 1965) and Martin De Mattia (Germany, 1963) active since 1994.
