The relationship between Fleischer and Boltanski was long-standing, an intense dialogue and a friendship that lasted over fifty years. In 1969, the French director began a project on then-unknown Boltanski. The first shots converge in the short film Quelques activités de Christian B. (1970). As Boltanski’s multifaceted work takes shape, Fleischer is there to capture moments of early artistic creations: performative actions, the works with shadow-boxes of 1981, but also cinematographic experiments. The young author is aware that he is recording on film the path of an artist who is finding his own way of expressing himself. This attitude is the basis of the film which, between flashbacks and unpublished materials, retraces the entire career of the French artist with an intimate gaze. From Monumenta (2010) to the 2011 Venice Biennale, passing through numerous solo exhibitions in New York and Rome, Fleischer is always present to personally follow his friend’s international career. The most recent filming took place on the occasion of the important retrospective Faire son temps that the Center Pompidou dedicated to Boltanski in 2019. The film is not just a portrait of the great artist who died in July of this year at the age of 77, but an intense filmic experience on the relationship between art and memory.
