Wuhan Punk

by Chris Zhongtian Yuan, 2020, 12’01’’

The Chinese city of Wuhan is evoked through a voice-over that recalls characters and events: from the story of a missing former member of the punk group Si Dou Le to the Autonomous Youth Center, from the anarchic, illegal performance venues to the epic flood of 1998. Between drone footage and computer-generated imagery, the mythologized industrial city appears to glow in a post-apocalyptic smog.
Commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella.

Twice upon a while

by Marina Xenofontos, 2020, 3’52’’

Made with an open source digital animation program - follows an ideologically befuddled teenager failing to complete her tasks, stumbling through her childhood bedroom into a dreamlike vision, which drops her onto a rocky seaside via a space of kaleidoscopic darkness. The excerpts read out during the video come from an untitled poem by Cypriot poet Andriana Ierodiakonou; lyrics from two Greek folk songs as well as notes from the artist’s diary.

Terra incognita

by Timotheus Anggawan Kusno, 2022, 22’

The artist's re-enactment of mass mobilization during the succession to the Indonesian regime is accompanied by a narrator's recitation of an anachronistic poem. The production of this work of fiction reveals the overlapping and obscuring of memories, resulting in a cacophony of voices and distortion of memory.
Produced by Han Nefkens Foundations-Loop Barcelona.

Raised in the Dust

by Andro Eradze, 2022, 8’12’’

In the Georgian poem The Snake Eater (1901) by Vazha-Pshavela, the protagonist has a supernatural talent for understanding the language of nature. Taxidermized animals appear in a forest, disturbed by an uproar of New Year’s Eve fireworks. Critical of the human carnival that is disruptive, toxic, and fatal for wildlife, Eradze’s film repositions fireworks as an entry point into the dark and mythological side of the forest, a world of plants, animals, and phantoms.

Pacific Club

by Valentin Noujaïm, 2023, 16’37’’

In 1979, the Pacific Club was opened in the basement of La Défense - the business district of Paris. It was the first nightclub for Arabs from the suburbs; a parallel world of dance, sweat, young loves, and one-night utopias. Azedine, 17 years old at the time, tells us the forgotten story of this club and of this generation who dreamed of integrating into France but who soon came face to face with racism, the AIDS epidemic, and heroin.

Gerundi Circular

by Claudia Pagès Rabal, 2021, 14’15’’

The narrative is set around three sites related to the past and present of Barcelona’s commercial port: the ship-shaped business hub of the World Trade Center, the 19th-century customs building, and the harbour breakwater.
Global maritime routes, legal jargon, and the relentless flow of commerce and people compose a seamless 360-degree loop, in which the footage blends the rhythmic gestures of three performers and layers of handwritten texts into a series of music-video sequences.

An Excavation

by Maeve Brennan, 2022, 20’21’’

The artist documents an investigation into a series of looted vases, discovered at Geneva Freeport in 2014. Made in the 4th century BC by Apulian artisans, these vases remained buried in tombs for 2500 years before they were clandestinely brought to light. The objects’ journeys through the hands of looters, smugglers, restorers and dealers are counterpointed by the hand-painted stories that adorn them.

Nummer achttien, the breath of life

by Guido van der Werve, Netherlands, 2023, 94’
V.O.: Dutch, English, German; S.T.: English, Dutch, Italian
Italian premiere in the presence of the artist

In 2016, following a serious car accident, the author remained in a coma for a month. Film recounts his rehabilitation by intertwining scenes from his childhood in which difficult relationships with his parents emerge. It is composed of numerous elements, also from other previous videos by the artist: 8 mm films and paintings made by the artist's father, a choir and an orchestra, an alter ego of the artist himself impersonated by a little red-haired girl, the family home in Papendrecht, his home in Finland and the medical center in Berlin where he stayed after the accident.

The Pixelated Revolution

a non-academic lecture by Rabih Mroué, 2012, 60’

In 2011, at the beginning of the Syrian revolution, Lebanese artist Rabih Mroué started collecting low-quality images recorded by demonstrators protesting against the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Mroué questions the relationship between the act of documenting the 'here and now' with death and the way it is perceived by the rest of the observing world. Moving between visual arts, theatre and historical research, the artist critically reflects on the aesthetics of violence.

Bloodlines

by Amie Siegel, United States, United Kingdom, 2022, sound, 82'
Italian premiere in the presence of the artist

Bloodlines follows the movement of paintings by English artist George Stubbs (1724–1806) from their homes in private aristocratic country estates and public institutions across the UK, to a Stubbs exhibition in a public gallery, and their subsequent return. As the film unfolds, Siegel draws out connections between her subjects and those of the paintings; people, property, animals and objects move between the real and the represented, creating a mirror of human, equine and artistic bloodlines, and highlighting both lineages of ownership and the constructs of image-making itself. Offering a window into the world of cultural heritage, Bloodlines exposes structures of cultural ownership, labor and inherited wealth which continue to shape British society today.

Capital

by Basma al-Sharif, Egypt, Italy, Germany, 2023, 17'
vo: Italian, Arab, French; st: English; Italian

A woman on the receiver of a white telephone is seduced by a male voice promoting new apartments for sale. A ventriloquist (played by artist Diego Marcon) makes puns. These scenes alternate with commercials for luxury residential complexes.
The title Capital refers to the colossal project for a new Egyptian capital, planned during the 1970s.
The film, in a satirical style, makes connections between fascist "white telephone" propaganda cinema and new urban construction in Egypt.

Nummer veertien, home

by Guido van der Werve, video 4k, 2012, sound, 54’
In the presence of the artist

The cemetery of Père Lachaise is the place where Frédéric Chopin is buried, minus his heart, which his sister secretly took to a church in Warsaw to fulfill the composer's last wish. The artist embarks on a journey from Poland to France as if it were a triathlon. The film is a requiem in three movements and twelve acts in which three narratives intertwine: the journey completed as an Ironman marathon, an unreal return to his native Holland and some scenes inspired by the journey that Alexander the Great made from Macedonia to Babylon.

In the presence of the artist

In the Finnish Gulf of Bothnia, the artist is filmed while walking on an ice field in front of an enormous icebreaker. There is no music, only the dull thuds of the ship as it travels along its trajectory. In the wide shot, van der Werve seems fragile and tiny, about to be swallowed by the immense ship behind him.

The film traces the long career of the Californian artist Robert Irwin (Long Beach 1928) known for his site-specific installations, ephemeral interventions that play with the perception of space and light. Dearest Fiona

by Fiona Tan, Netherlands, 2023, 102’
vo: English; st: Italian
In the presence of the artist

A journey through time and space that connects distant places and events. The film is made with archival footage depicting scenes of everyday life in the Netherlands in the early 1900s, while a voiceover reads letters the artist's father sent to her from Australia in the late 1980s -a correspondence about the small events of everyday and local life that weaves together epochal events. Through a hypnotic montage, the juxtaposition of word and image merges micro and macro history, in a journey suspended halfway between dream and reality.

Twittering Soul

The 3D feature film stages a story of his country's folklore set in the microcosm of a remote village in the woods at the end of the 19th century, when daily communication was characterized by archaic/esoteric expressions full of symbolism. Among the protagonists are two girls and two itinerant musicians who observe disturbing events, unable to discern fantasy from reality. The scenes are accompanied by flutes and the dialogues of the protagonists, an enchanted fairy tale in which man and nature live in harmony.

A fragment of Winnie the Pooh, in which Piglet slams against Uffa the owl's window, waking him, is edited with clips of 16mm film in different shades of red. Some graphic signs drawn on the optical sound band generate noises that mix with the two characters' noises. The video was conceived as a loop in which Gufo is continually woken up when Piglet crashes into his house.

Single File

by Simon Liu, Italy, Hong Kong, United Kingdom, United States, 2023, sound, 11’
World premiere in the presence of the artist

In the wake of cataclysmic regional change in the artist's homeland of Hong Kong, Simon Liu’s new Cinema-Strobo-Scopic film features a laborious sequence of analogue darkroom practices and dense shrouds of video processing techniques which actively work to both conceal and reappraise approaches to personal expression in the face of censorship. Times ahead and behind collide - a new linearity is in need of; the glittering lore of the way things were, generations lost to resolution errors. Sifting through new realities of misinformation, digital consciousness, and cultural disappearance, Single File seeks new lexicons of civil disobedience through formal experimentation.

White Balls on Walls

by Sarah Vos, Netherlands, 2022, 90’
vo: Dutch; st: English, Italian
In the presence of the author

Rein Wolfs, the director of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and his team are working on the process of renovating the museum's exhibition rooms. Like many western museums, the Stedelijk has long been a place of representation of white, western patriarchal power. From 2019 to 2022, the museum has undergone a process of updating and reorganising the collections to give visibility to female and non-white artists. The documentary is a remarkable account in which the successes but also the failures of this difficult process are shown.

Nummer zes, Steinway grand piano, wake me up to go to sleep and all the color of the rainbow

by Guido van der Werve, 35mm transferred in HD, 2006, 17’09”
vo: English, Dutch; st: English, Italian

Sitting on a stool at his upright piano, the artist is immersed in his thoughts while a voice-over tells the story of the Steinway & Sons grand piano and how very few pianists still have the privilege to play this instrument. Wandering dejectedly through the streets of Amsterdam, he continues to think of the Steinway. In the next scene, a crane hoists the large piano through the window of the narrow room of his apartment. Here an entire chamber orchestra accompanies him in the performance of Chopin's first piano concerto.

I Am Hymns of the New Temples
أنا تراتیل المعابد الجدیدة

by Wael Shawky, Italy, Egypt, 2023, 57’,42”
vo: Classical Arabic; st: English, Italian
In the presence of Andrea Viliani, co-curator Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Materials

The film was produced in the context of Wael Shawky's participation in the Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Materials, originally conceived by Massimo Osanna and Andrea Viliani, who oversaw the production of the film.
For the Egyptian artist, Pompeii is a symbol of the end and the beginning, a matrix of history and story, a natural ecosystem and a thousand-year-old witness to the stratification of Mediterranean cultures. The archaeological area therefore becomes a theatre of the constant mutual regeneration of memories and narratives, in which the temples of the Greco-Roman religion and those of Egyptian mythologies coexist, continuing to tell our relationship with what is human and what is divine, with our idea of justice, with our origins and how they have mixed together, leading us to here and now.

Man in Black

by Wang Bing, France, USA, UK, 2023, 60’
vo: Chinese; st: English, Italian
Italian premiere

The Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris resonate with the voice and naked body of the eighty-six-year-old Chinese composer Wang Xilin as he recounts the painful trajectory of his life, from a member of the Communist Party to his departure, until he became a political dissident defending freedom of expression. From his words we understand how the wounds found their symbolic representation in some of the symphonies he composed, the soundtrack of the film. A lucid portrait of a man who has made art his form of protest and resistance.
